As the first few sunrises of 2015 light up our bakery, we can't help but smile as we breathe in the smell of fresh baking bread and look back on the year behind us. 2014 was a busy year here at the bakery and we thought we'd share some of our most memorable moments with you!

1. Local Schools Now Serve Truckee Sourdough!

The kids in our community are piling their plates at lunchtime with healthy, local food this year! The new National Nutrition Regulations require all baked products served at schools to be whole wheat and our bakery proudly stepped up to the plate with whole wheat hamburger buns, sandwich breads, bagels and even pizza dough! These schools include Truckee Tahoe Unified School District, Nevada Joint Union High School District in Grass Valley and Placer Union High School District in Auburn. The Nevada City Union wrote a great article about it here.

2. We Underwent 3rd Party Certification!

In 2014 our bakery underwent a 3rd party health audit and received Certification for our Food Safety HAACP Program. Some new additions to our bakery include an increase in hand washing stations, a specially designed roll up door, and a metal detector that every loaf of bread now goes through! It was a lot of work and we are very proud of our whole team for making it possible!

3. Same Bread, New Grocery Stores!

Every year we find new grocery stores to sell our breads in and 2014 was no exception! These new stores include the Safeway in Susanville, Big Al's Market in Wheatland and Cracchiolos Market & Deli in Woodland.

4. We Attended Farmers Markets & Events (Again)!

2014 marked the year our breads started socializing again! We spent the summer handing out samples and meeting our loyal fans! We had a great time in the Susanville Farmers Market & the Sierra Valley Farmers Market. Our booth at Truckee Thursdays and Made in Tahoe were both a big hit with free samples and our delicious fresh baked pretzels! You also might of seen us pairing our tasty breads with different wines at Mid-Summer Madness in Lake Almanor, the Rolling Hills Casino Wine, Food & Art Festival, and the Truckee Donner Soroptomist Wine Festival.

5. We Went Online!

This past year we began building a very active online presence. We launched our beautiful website built by Onyx Digital Media, and joined major social media channels. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Google Plus! Support us by following us and feel free to share your Truckee Sourdough creations by tagging us or using #TruckeeSour.

A lot has happened at our bakery this past year but we are even more excited to see what's to come in 2015! We would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us. We could not have done any of this without you!

A peek into Truckee's past and a few "Need to Know" facts about this blog.

Keith and Dianne Nikkel began this bakery a long, long time ago, in a time when Truckee, CA was a very different town than it is today.  There wasn't a bypass, or any multimillion dollar homes built; it was a simple yet thriving railroad town nestled in the mountains.  Every car had to pass right through downtown Truckee in order to get to Lake Tahoe.  And there was free parking as far as the eye could see!
